Chapter 7

Staying Connected to your Values

Values constitute a critical part of how you make important changes in your life. They are your judgment of what is most important in life and what you believe in. It is easy to become out of touch with your values and you may be holding on to values that no longer accurately reflect who you are. Sometimes they were never your values to begin with, but someone else’s values you took on. When you don’t align with our values you feel less authentic and less motivated.

Values are often very personal in that they reflect how you were raised, your family, the culture you grew up in, the experiences you have had in your life, and often the very best of who you hope to become. When the things you do and the way you act matches your values, you are more satisfied and content.

Your strengths often reflect or are tied to the values you hold.

For example, if one of your strengths is that you are a fair person, you might have an underlying value for justice. The strength of being fair can be a way to live that value in action.

Identify Your Personal Values

Take a few moments to reflect on what values are important to you and record them below. As you do this try to withhold judgment and pick the values that resonate with you, as opposed to the ones you believe you should have. In case you need help getting started, I’ve included a list with some examples of examples of values.

If your values aren’t coming to you easily, try this exercise. Think of a time in your life when you felt most happy and fulfilled. Take a moment to visualize it.

Now, think about the time you were most unhappy and unfulfilled.

Make it A Habit

Now that you have determined your top values, you can make a conscious decision to live by them. Start by creating a daily visual reminder of your top three values.
Here are some examples of how:

At some point toward the end of the day, maybe after work or as you get ready for bed, consider how you lived out each of these values and where you found yourself struggling. Think about what got in the way. It’s important is that you are noticing these things, and over time, you’re going to be more aligned with your values and will feel better.
